Distinguished and Famous people from Nambucca Valley

🏉 Greg Inglis

Greg Inglis began junior rugby league with the Bowraville Tigers before a career that made him one of the game’s outstanding players. Born in nearby Kempsey, he later played for Melbourne and South Sydney, represented Queensland and Australia, and became known for his ability across several positions. Family ties brought him back into the valley’s sporting life when he joined the Macksville Sea Eagles after his NRL retirement. His return brought experience from elite competition back to community football. Bowraville and Macksville have distinct parts in the story, with Kempsey retained as his birthplace.

🎖️ Frank Partridge

Frank Partridge grew up working on his family’s dairy and banana farm at Upper Newee Creek after schooling at Tewinga. His wartime service on Bougainville brought the Victoria Cross for an action in July 1945. Returning to the valley, he resumed farming and became involved with ex-service organisations and the banana growers’ federation. He also became a successful television quiz contestant, adding a surprising second kind of public recognition. The district’s memorials and the school bearing his name commemorate a farmer whose life also included exceptional wartime courage.

🤝 Maurie Lonergan

Maurie Lonergan received Nambucca Valley’s 2026 Citizen of the Year award for decades of service to Bowraville Junior Rugby League. Over fifty-three years he undertook coaching, committee work and a nine-year period as president, later continuing to share his experience through coaching leadership. That contribution supported generations of children and the volunteers around them. A club needs people to organise training, answer questions and keep returning after the final whistle; Lonergan’s record illustrates how much of local sport rests on that continuity. His recognition honours sustained community work alongside the valley’s better-known professional players.
